DeviceMaster Products Meet NEMA TS2 Requirements

Traffic CabinetField hardened device servers offer the broadest range of port density options with extended temperatures, designed specifically for harsh roadside environments.

Products in traffic management systems can be subject to exceedingly harsh roadside environments such as; extreme temperature, operating voltage and humidity fluctuation, vibration and shock. These stringent elements are the reasons why DOTs, cities and counties require all products to have the NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) TS2 certification.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association strongly believes that standards play an important role in the design, production and distribution of products developed for both national and international commerce. This standard gives customers complete confidence to install a NEMA TS2 rated product in their application due to the extensive product testing under severe circumstances. Products with the NEMA TS2 certification give customers confidence that those products are reliable and will be fully functional when installed in a roadside environment.

Comtrol is excited to announce that our DeviceMaster® serial device servers have achieved the NEMA TS2 certification after many hours of independent lab testing and successfully verifying the product line’s performance when subjected to severe roadside conditions.

"We know how important the NEMA TS2 certification is to our traffic and transportation customers," Comtrol Vice President of Global Sales, Bradford Beale said about the National Electrical Manufacturer’s Association standard. "To show our dedication to these customers and others that require extended temperatures ranging from -34° to 74° degrees Celsius, our standard 1, 2, 4 and 8 port DeviceMaster RTS and PRO products are compliant at no additional cost."

These field hardened device servers provide connectivity for a broad range of traffic and transportation applications currently used by over 300 traffic and transportation agencies across all 50 states. These customers use DeviceMaster device servers to control and manage intelligent transportation systems (ITS) including traffic management systems, arterial and freeway management, roadside cabinet networking and intersection management and control. Reliable and easy-to-install, DeviceMaster device servers are also cost effective solutions for open road tolling (ORT), electronic toll collection (ETC), toll plazas, and parking automation environments.

"Ensuring that our products are field hardened—especially for harsh temperatures— has been a critical design objective for some time," said Beale. "In fact, while NEMA TS2 certification requires that systems withstand temperatures of -34° C, we actually designed the DeviceMaster products to withstand -37° C, and in some cases, up to 85 degrees C."

Comtrol is proud to be the only manufacturer that supports this NEMA TS2 standard with the broadest range of port density options, free of charge. For more information please contact a Comtrol sales representative, sales@comtrol.com or +1 763.494.4100.

What is RS-485?

RS-485 is a standard that defines the signaling levels for serial communications equipment. Each signal is transmitted or received as differential signals with a pair of wires. This differential signaling allows for greater signal distance, up to 4000’, and better noise immunity in an electrically noisy environment. RS-422 uses the same signaling levels as RS-485.

RS-485 can operate in 2-wire (half-duplex) or 4-wire (full-duplex) mode. 2-wire uses a single pair of wires for both transmit and receive data. Only one port may transmit at one time with up to 32 ports receiving the same data.

4-wire requires two pairs of wires. Up to 32 slave receivers can connect to the always on master device transmitter on one pair. All slave transmitters are connected to the master receiver on the second pair. The master lets the slave port know when it is allowed to transmit. This prevents more than one port from transmitting at the same time as another port.

The Comtrol RocketPort INFINITY, RocketPort EXPRESS and DeviceMaster RTS 1E/2E products support RS-485 2-wire and 4-wire master and slave modes of operation.
